Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57
Morning glory, starlit sky,
Soaring music, scholar's truth,
Flight of swallows, autumn leaves,
Memory's treasure, grace of youth:
Open are the gifts of God,
Gifts of love to mind and sense;
Hidden is love's agony,
Love's endeavour, love's expense.
Love that gives, gives evermore,
Gives with zeal, with eager hands,
Spares not, keeps not, all outpours,
Ventures all, its all expends.
Drained is love in making full,
Bound in setting others free,
Poor in making many rich,
Weak in giving power to be.
Therefore he who shows us God
Helpless hangs upon the tree;
And the nails and crown of thorns
Tell of what God's love must be.
Here is God, no monarch he,
Throned in easy state to reign;
Here is God, whose arms of love,
Aching, spent, the world sustain.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God,

and evil cannot dwell with you.
5Braggarts cannot stand in your sight; *
you hate all those who work wickedness.
6You destroy those who speak lies; *
the bloodthirsty and deceitful, O Lord, you abhor.
7But as for me, through the greatness of your mercy I will
go into your house; *
I will bow down toward your holy temple in awe of you.
8Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness,
because of those who lie in wait for me; *
make your way straight before me.
9For there is no truth in their mouth; *
there is destruction in their heart;
10Their throat is an open grave; *
they flatter with their tongue.
11Declare them guilty, O God; *
let them fall, because of their schemes.
12Because of their many transgressions cast them out, *
for they have rebelled against you.
13But all who take refuge in you will be glad; *
they will sing out their joy for ever.
14You will shelter them, *
so that those who love your Name may exult in you.
15For you, O Lord, will bless the righteous; *
you will defend them with your favor as with a shield.
1Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger; *
do not punish me in your wrath.
2Have pity on me, Lord, for I am weak; *
heal me, Lord, for my bones are racked.
3My spirit shakes with terror; *
how long, O Lord, how long?
4Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; *
save me for your mercys sake.
5For in death no one remembers you; *
and who will give you thanks in the grave?
6I grow weary because of my groaning; *
every night I drench my bed
and flood my couch with tears.
7My eyes are wasted with grief *
and worn away because of all my enemies.
8Depart from me, all evildoers, *
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
9The Lord has heard my supplication; *
the Lord accepts my prayer.
10All my enemies shall be confounded
and quake with fear; *
they shall turn back and suddenly be put to shame.

1In the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance that they possess, towns for the Levites to live in; you shall also give to the Levites pasture lands surrounding the towns. 3The towns shall be theirs to live in, and their pasture lands shall be for their cattle, for their livestock, and for all their animals.
9The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 10Speak to the Israelites, and say to them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11then you shall select cities to be cities of refuge for you, so that a slayer who kills a person without intent may flee there. 12The cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger, so that the slayer may not die until there is a trial before the congregation. 13The cities that you designate shall be six cities of refuge for you: 14you shall designate three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities in the land of Canaan, to be cities of refuge. 15These six cities shall serve as refuge for the Israelites, for the resident or transient alien among them, so that anyone who kills a person without intent may flee there. 30If anyone kills another, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses; but no one shall be put to death on the testimony of a single witness. 31Moreover you shall accept no ransom for the life of a murderer who is subject to the death penalty; a murderer must be put to death. 32Nor shall you accept ransom for one who has fled to a city of refuge, enabling the fugitive to return to live in the land before the death of the high priest. 33You shall not pollute the land in which you live; for blood pollutes the land, and no expiation can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it. 34You shall not defile the land in which you live, in which I also dwell; for I the Lord dwell among the Israelites.

31What then are we to say about these things? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35Who will separate us from the love of Christ? For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred? 18And you say, 'Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath.' 19How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20So whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; 21and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it; 22and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it. 23"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. 24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! 25"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean.

When any are held unjustly, bring them release; forgive us, and teach us to improve our justice. Remember those who work in these institutions; keep them humane and compassionate; and save them from becoming brutal or callous. And since what we do for those in prison, O Lord, we do for you, constrain us to improve their lot. All this we ask for your mercy's sake. Amen.
Blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you: Look with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to those who care for them, give patient understanding and persevering love. Amen.
